Where to Sell Gold Britannia Coins in the UK
Owner, Exclusive Coins

A gold Britannia is easy to sell, but not all buyers will treat it the same. Because it is made of gold, its value follows the gold price closely, so the real differences between buyers are the margin they keep, how clearly they explain it, and how they treat proofs and special editions. This guide helps you choose the right place to sell and avoid the usual traps. If you have other gold coins too, such as Krugerrands, Maple Leafs or £5 coins, our sell gold coins page explains how we buy them.
First, know what you have
Check the size (1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz or 1/10oz) and the date. Coins dated 2013 or later are 24ct (99.99%) gold, and earlier coins are 22ct. Check for a proof finish, a case or a certificate. Our gold Britannia buyer's guide explains the differences, and the sell gold Britannias page shows how we value them.
Your options
A specialist coin dealer
The most common route. A dealer will price your coin from the live gold price, tell you how it was calculated and, if you accept, pay you. It is quick, there are no listing fees and a good dealer will recognise a proof or special edition that is worth more than its gold.
A bullion dealer
Bullion dealers price strictly on metal. That works for a plain bullion Britannia, but they may not pay extra for a proof, a limited edition or a graded coin.
Auction
An option for rare or limited issues. There is seller commission, a wait for the sale and no guaranteed price. For a standard bullion Britannia it is rarely worth it.
Online marketplaces
You reach many buyers, but you take on fees, postage, questions and the risk of disputes. Be careful about fraudulent buyers and always use tracked, insured postage.
Jewellers and cash-for-gold shops
Usually priced by weight and carat, sometimes with a large margin. They may also not recognise a Britannia as a coin, so ask whether the price is for scrap.
What to ask any buyer
- How is your price calculated from the live gold price?
- How long do you hold the price after I post the coin?
- Are there fees or deductions?
- Do you pay more for proofs, limited editions and graded coins?
- How and when will I be paid?
Bullion or proof?
A bullion Britannia usually sells close to its gold value. A proof or special edition in its original case with a certificate can sell for more, if the buyer values it. Keep any packaging, because it matters. See what is a proof coin.
Protect yourself
- Check the buyer has a real address, phone number and clear terms.
- Photograph your coin, front, back and edge, before sending.
- Use tracked, insured postage, or ask about collection.
- Agree the price before you post anything.
- Do not clean the coin.
Tax
Gold Britannias are British legal tender, so gains are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax. You do not pay VAT when selling investment gold to a dealer. See gold coin selling tax. This is not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Will I get the full gold price?
Dealers need a margin, so expect a little below the live gold price. A good dealer will tell you exactly how the figure is built.
Is a 24ct Britannia worth more than a 22ct one?
Value follows the gold content. Compare the weight of pure gold, not just the size.
Do I need to post it?
You can get a valuation from photos first. For larger holdings, we can discuss a home visit or insured collection.
