What affects the value of a sovereign

    • The gold price. A sovereign is worth at least the gold in it, so its value follows the live gold price.
    • The date. Many sovereigns sell close to their gold value, but some dates and mints were struck in small numbers and are worth much more.
    • The condition. Heavy wear reduces any premium. Uncirculated and proof coins are worth the most.
    • Proof or bullion. Proof sovereigns are struck to a higher finish and often carry a premium, especially in the original case with its certificate.
    • Grading. A sovereign graded by PCGS or NGC can be worth more than the same coin ungraded.
    • Damage. Mounts, holes, repairs and cleaning all reduce a collector premium, although a damaged sovereign is still worth its gold.

Sovereign weight, size and gold content

A British sovereign weighs 7.98g and is about 22mm across. It is struck in 22ct gold, which is 91.67% gold, so it holds about 7.32g of pure gold. A half sovereign holds half of that. Sovereigns made before 1933 and modern sovereigns share the same weight and fineness, and all are legal tender with a face value of 拢1, although the gold in them is worth far more.

Which monarch and type do you have?

The portrait on the front tells you roughly when your sovereign was struck:

    • George III, George IV and William IV: early sovereigns from 1817 to 1837
    • Victoria: Young Head (from 1838), Jubilee Head (1887 to 1893) and Veiled or Old Head (1893 to 1901)
    • Edward VII: 1902 to 1910
    • George V: 1911 to 1932
    • Elizabeth II: from 1957, plus modern proof and bullion issues
    • Charles III: from 2023

The date is on the back of the coin or beneath the portrait. A small letter near the date, such as S, M or P, shows it was struck at the Sydney, Melbourne or Perth mint rather than in London. Tell us what you can see and we will do the rest.

    Sovereigns and tax

Sovereigns are British legal tender, and British legal tender coins are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Rules can change and depend on your circumstances, so check with HMRC or an accountant if you are selling a large holding. This is general information, not tax advice.

    Questions before you start

How much is a gold sovereign worth?

It is worth at least the gold in it, so the live gold price sets the starting point. Scarce dates, proofs and high grades can be worth more. Our guide to how much a gold sovereign is worth explains more, or send us photos for a free valuation.

How much gold is in a sovereign?

A sovereign holds about 7.32g of pure gold. It weighs 7.98g and is 22ct (91.67%) gold.

Do you buy worn or damaged sovereigns?

Yes. A worn or damaged sovereign is still worth its gold. We value it on the metal content and explain our figure.

Do you buy sovereigns in jewellery?

If a sovereign is in a mount or has been made into jewellery, send us photos and tell us what it is. We will say honestly whether we can value it.

What is the difference between a sovereign and a half sovereign?

A sovereign weighs 7.98g and holds about 7.32g of pure gold. A half sovereign is half the size with half the gold. Both are British gold coins of the same fineness. We buy both.

    Should I clean my sovereigns?

No. Cleaning scratches the surface and can reduce the value of a collectable coin. Send them as they are.

How quickly will I hear back?

Within 24 hours. There is no charge and no obligation to sell.

Is it safe to post gold coins?

We recommend Royal Mail insured postage, which covers up to 拢2,500. Please contact us before you post anything. For larger collections we can arrange a home visit and insured courier collection.
