What affects what your gold coins are worth
- The gold price. A gold coin is worth at least the gold in it, so its value follows the live gold price.
- Weight and purity. The value depends on how much pure gold the coin holds, not just its weight. A 22ct coin holds less gold per gram than a 24ct coin.
- The date and mintage. Scarce dates and low-mintage issues can be worth more than the gold alone.
- Proof or bullion. Proof coins in their original cases often carry a premium over bullion coins.
- Condition. Marks and scratches reduce a collector premium. Please do not clean your coins.
- Grading. A coin graded by PCGS or NGC can be worth more than the same coin ungraded.
Gold bullion coins explained
- Krugerrand. Struck in South Africa since 1967. The 1oz coin is 22ct gold and weighs 33.93g, which holds exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. It is also made in 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz sizes.
- Gold Maple Leaf. Struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, in 24ct gold that is 99.99% or 99.9% pure depending on the year. The 1oz coin holds one troy ounce of gold.
- Gold Britannia. Struck by the Royal Mint. See our sell gold Britannias page for sizes, years and how 22ct and 24ct versions differ.
- Gold Panda. Struck in China in 99.9% gold. Panda designs change every year, and some sell for more than their gold value.
We buy all of these in any finish and any condition. Tell us the type, size and year and we will value it.
Looking to sell sovereigns?
Sovereigns have their own page. See sell gold sovereigns for weights, how to identify the monarch and date, and what makes some sovereigns worth more than their gold. We also have a page for half sovereigns.
Selling gold coins and tax
British legal tender gold coins, such as sovereigns and Britannias, are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Foreign bullion coins such as Krugerrands and Maple Leafs are not British legal tender, so a gain on them can be taxable. Rules change and depend on your circumstances, so please check with HMRC or an accountant before selling a large holding. This is general information, not tax advice.
Questions before you start
Is the valuation free?
Yes. It is free and there is no obligation to sell.
How quickly will I hear back?
Within 24 hours.
How much is a gold coin worth?
It depends on the type, the weight, the current gold price and the condition. A gold coin is worth at least the gold in it. Send us photos for a free valuation.
Do you buy Krugerrands and Maple Leafs?
Yes. We buy gold bullion coins in all finishes and sizes, including Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, Pandas and Britannias.
Do you buy damaged or worn gold coins?
Yes. A damaged or worn gold coin is still worth its gold. We value it on the metal content and explain our figure.
Is it safe to post gold coins?
We recommend Royal Mail insured postage, which covers up to £2,500. For anything larger, we can arrange a home visit and insured courier collection.
Do you buy 50p coins?
We only buy gold and silver coins, so we do not buy standard cupro-nickel 50p coins. If you have gold or silver proof coins, send us details.
