Gold Coins vs Gold Bars: Which Is Better in the UK?

You have decided to own physical gold. Now comes the question that trips up many first-time buyers: coins or bars? Both are real gold, and both are generally VAT-free to buy as investment gold. But they behave very differently when you come to sell, when the taxman looks, and when you only want to cash in a little.

This guide compares them honestly on cost, flexibility, tax, authenticity and storage, so you can choose what suits your situation. It is general information, not financial advice.

Price per gram

Larger bars usually carry a lower premium per gram than coins, because they cost less to make for each ounce. A 1kg bar, for example, has a much lower premium per gram than a 1/10oz coin. Small bars and coins are closer in price, and coins in recognisable designs are often easier to resell at a fair price.

The lesson: if you are buying a large sum for the long term, bars can cost less per gram. If you are buying smaller amounts, the difference shrinks.

Flexibility

Coins come in small units, so you can sell a little at a time. If you need money for a particular purpose, you sell one or two coins and keep the rest. A large bar is all or nothing, and is harder to break up. That can be a real problem if you only need part of the value.

Tax

This is where coins can have a real edge. British legal tender coins such as sovereigns and Britannias are generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax, while gold bars and foreign coins are not. That means a profit on a bar could be taxable above your annual allowance, while the same profit on a sovereign may not be. See our selling tax guide and check current gov.uk rules. This is general information, not tax advice.

Recognition and authenticity

Coins are easy to identify by weight, size and design, which helps buyers trust them. Bars should come in sealed assay packaging, and it is harder to check one that has been taken out. If you buy a bar, keep it in its original packaging with the certificate. A bar removed from its packaging can be harder to sell or may need re-testing.

Liquidity: how easily can you sell?

Sovereigns and Britannias are among the most widely recognised gold coins in the UK, so there are plenty of buyers. Popular bars from recognised refiners also sell easily, but bars from lesser-known sources may be harder to sell. Whichever you choose, buy from a source you could easily sell back to.

Storage and security

Coins and small bars take little space. A large number of coins is heavier than the same value in a bar, but harder to steal in one go if split up. Whichever you choose, check your insurance and think about how you will store them, at home or in a vault.

Side-by-side summary

  • Premium per gram: bars are usually lower, especially larger ones. Coins are usually higher.
  • Selling a little at a time: coins are easier.
  • Capital Gains Tax: British legal tender coins are generally exempt. Bars are not.
  • Authentication: coins are easier to check. Bars need their packaging.
  • Storage: both are compact. Bars are denser for large values.

Which suits you?

  • Smaller sums, flexible selling, tax-exempt coins: sovereigns and Britannias.
  • A large sum at the lowest premium per gram: larger bars may suit, if you are comfortable with the tax position.
  • A mix: some people hold a core of bars and a few coins for flexibility.
