In celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday, the 2016 proof sovereign presents a unique portrait curated by James Butler, a marked divergence from the fifth portrait effigy by Jody Clark found in the bullion edition. This distinct portrait echoes the design previously utilized for the 2015 commemorative £5 coin, marking the Queen's status as the longest-reigning monarch.
The coin's reverse is adorned with the timeless design of St. George triumphing over the dragon, a masterpiece by the renowned Benedetto Pistrucci.
Obverse:
Showcases a special rendition of Elizabeth II by James Butler, exclusive to the proof edition. The designer's initials, "JB", are subtly positioned beneath the Queen's portrait. Encircling the design is the inscription: ELIZABETH II·DEI·GRA·REGINA·FID·DEF.
Reverse:
Carries the iconic portrayal of St. George conquering the dragon, engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci. The year of issue and "BP", the engraver's initials, are imprinted below the scene.
