The 2012 Summer Olympics were held in July and August 2012. Over 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees participated in 302 events.
It was in 2005 when the 2012 games were awarded to London and the countdown to the games begun. With the 2012 Olympics, London became the first city to host the modern Olympics three times – having previously hosted the summer games of 1908 and 1948.
The eagerly awaited opening ceremony was directed by Danny Boyle and lasted almost four hours. An estimated 900 million people worldwide tuned in, making it the most viewed ceremony in both the UK and US. One of the most memorable sequences saw The Queen being escorted by James Bond (Daniel Craig) as she skydived into the Olympic Stadium.
The games themselves received widespread acclaim and were ground-breaking on many fronts. Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time when he won his 22nd medal in London.
Female athletes from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunel, competed for the first time – making it the first Olympic Games to see a female athlete from every eligible competing country and competing in every sport with the introduction of women’s boxing.
Great Britain finished third on the medal winner’s tale behind the USA and China, and the games of London 2012 were hailed a success – for their organisation, attendance, standards of competitions and the focus on sporting legacy and post-game venue sustainability not previously matched by any hosting city.
